Do We Really Need Them?

So today was quite a day! It wasn't at all how I - or Tommy or Graham or my mom for that matter - had planned it! And you can totally think I am a complete jerk after reading this...

About 4am this morning Tommy woke me up (as much as possible, since it was so early and I am NOT a morning person) to tell me he was going to go to the hospital. Here is how the conversation went:

Tommy : (Whispering) Annie, I think I am going to go to the hospital...

Me : (barely awake/whispering) what? why?

Tommy : My stomach hurts really bad.

Me : (thinking... "Really?!?") where does it hurt?

Tommy : It hurts under my belly button

Me : Does it hurt on the right side?

Tommy : No

Me : Well, (yawn) it is probably not your appendix then. Was it something you ate? (actually thinking "I'm tired. Are you overreacting? I'm tired. I get cramps like this once a month and I don't wake you up. I'm tired.)

Tommy : It doesn't feel like that. They woke me up at 12 and have only gotten worse. I think I am going to go to Parker Adventist.

Me : Do you want us to go with you? ("Please no!")

Tommy : No (as he lays back down)

Me : (laying back down as well... I was just following his lead) Ok... (and I'm asleep)

So, by the time I wake up Tommy has left. I wondered to myself "did he go to work or to the hospital?" I check my phone and there is a text saying that he did check himself into the hospital. I asked him if he wanted us to go down there and wait with him and he said no (thankfully, because Graham would have been into everything and running around for sure!) I told him to keep me posted.

Now, I have been in the ER several times myself and I know how long it can take... So, Graham and I were still going to go with our original plans until we heard something from Tommy.... I mean, it could have been nothing, right?!? Yep, I said "could have been." I started getting ready for the day and had just turned off the water in the shower and Tommy calls.

'Did you get my text?"

"No, I was in the shower. What is up?"

"I have appendicitis, I am going in for surgery at 10:30"

(*note* those of you that know Tommy well, know that he is always - and I mean ALWAYS - making stuff up. Most people believe him, I admit he is pretty convincing! But I have learned to see through his "tricks" So, don't judge my response too badly...)

"Really? You're kidding, right?"

"No"

"Really, are you serious?"

"Yes, I am really going in for surgery"

"Really?"

"Yes"

"REALLY?? ... um... Ok, um.... I'll be right there..."

So, in 30 minutes, I got dressed, found a babysitter (thanks Kelly & mom!!!) and was in the ER at Parker. He really was there and really scheduled for surgery. I felt pretty crumby for thinking he was overreacting at 4am, for letting him go to the ER by himself, and then not even believing that he was going to have surgery. Luckily, I have a great husband (who has been drugged all day) who hasn't pointed out any of those terrible things. (I guess I need to make sure he stays drugged!! lol)

Anyway, the surgeon said 'we', but really it was just Tommy - I was rolling my eyes in my sleep, caught it early and that we would probably be able to go home today (which usually they keep you for 23hours).

They took Tommy in @ 11am and I got to go see him in recovery @ 2:30pm. We got home and he has been asleep pretty much since then. He seems pretty miserable, and I can totally relate... coming off anesthesia is NOT fun! So, I have been trying to be a very helpful and supportive wife to make up for my earlier faults.

He is doing really great and should be completely recovered next week.

What I have learned from this experience... Tommy is tougher than I give him credit for, I should really be a better wife, and hopefully stuff like this will happen after 8am so I can fully grasp what is going on...

To your credit, it would seem hard to believe anything was wrong with Tommy seeming so calm! Glad everything turned out ok!
